Bring on the Night . . . or: "Yes, I Still Own a Telescope . . . "

I know, I haven't posted any pictures since last Summer. The winters here are rough. Here are three from last night in the backyard.

The Pinwheel Galaxy. About the size of the full Moon in the sky, but obviously much more dim. It forms a triangle above the first two stars in the handle of the Big Dipper.

The Whirlpool Galaxy. About 24 million light years away and in the process of "eating" it's next-door-neighbor.

The Dumbbell Nebula. A star in our Milky Way that exploded thousands of years ago. Easily visible with a pair of binoculars.

Unfortunately the weather's turned good just in time for an extended trip to the Middle East - telescopes not invited. But hopefully by next year I'll have a little extra cash for a nicer camera and maybe even a new telescope.
